How long have you called Austin (or Central Texas) home, and what’s kept you here?
We both moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas. The inclusive spirit, family, and friends have kept us in Austin (plus our oldest son has a band, Me nd Adam, based in Austin!).
What inspired your connection with iACT?
We met Tom Spencer in 1996 at University United Methodist Church. Duff worked with Mike Blair (long involved with iACT and recently awarded a Hope Award) for decades at GSD&M Advertising. Our friendships with Tom and Mike led Liz to join the board soon after Tom joined AAIM as CEO.
What is it about iACT’s mission of bringing people of different faiths together that resonates with you personally?
We believe in one God and all God’s manifestations. We want to be in relationship with beautiful humans with diverse backgrounds.
Is there a program, story, or moment from iACT that has stayed with you?
When iACT was a much smaller organization, there was a group of us (Sandi Tomlinson, Marianne Rochelle, Vickie Schubert, and John Morgan) who planned the Hope Awards gala for a few years. One year Dan Rather spoke, and we have clear memories of him sharing his time generously with all guests, including several high school students who were volunteering for the event.
What do you most enjoy about being part of this community?
Doing good with great people.
Can you describe a moment when you really felt the impact of the work iACT does?
Working on Mrs. Banks’ home in 2011, I met a street artist, Art Randle. He joined us for part of the day and sketched photos of us working on Mrs. Banks’ home. She was present as well and so grateful.
What does “interfaith action” mean to you in your own life or faith tradition?
Interfaith means exactly between/among faiths. It means being intentional about broadening your spiritual and philanthropic community/communities and working together for the benefit of our shared communities.
If a neighbor or friend asked you why iACT matters, what would you tell them?
iACT brings people TOGETHER and naturally uplifts others and ourselves. It feels like the Kingdom of God.
What do you hope for Central Texas, and how do you see iACT being part of getting there?
We hope for affordability, security for the vulnerable, and more love and kindness. That IS iACT.
