My name is Sadaf Mudares, and I am deeply honored to stand before you today. My journey to this moment has been filled with challenges and triumphs. Four years ago, my family and I moved to the United States from Afghanistan, a country where women are often deprived of their basic rights and education. Despite the hardships, I fought against all odds and graduated, determined to create a better life for myself and my family.

Moving to a new country was not easy. The cultural shock, the loneliness, and the psychological pressures were overwhelming. But I knew that I could call Austin my new home, a place that welcomed us with open arms and provided us with safety and opportunities. I felt it was my duty to give back and contribute to the society that has given us so much.

During these years, I was able to attend the Interfaith Action of Central Texas (iACT), Health and Wellness program to get connected with the community, navigate the healthcare system in the U.S., learn English, and continue my passion for painting. Art became my refuge, a way to express my experiences and emotions. My paintings reflect the journey from Afghanistan to the United States, depicting themes of women’s empowerment, gender equality, and human rights. Through my art, I strive to tell the stories of countless women who face oppression and to inspire others to believe in their strength and potential.

Today, I am here not just to share my story, but to encourage all of you. To my fellow immigrants and refugees, I want to say: despite the challenges we face, we can overcome them. We can invest in our talents, work hard, and contribute to this beautiful country. Let us dream big, remain resilient, and never give up.

I am grateful for the interfaith action of the central Texas organization that has supported us. Your guidance and encouragement have been invaluable. Thank you for giving us a new beginning and the chance to contribute to our society.

Art is my voice, my way of expressing hope and resilience. It is a reminder that no matter how difficult our circumstances are, we can rise above them and create something beautiful. Let us support each other, believe in our dreams, and work together to build a brighter future.
